Book Reviews

As it is coming up to book week, I thought I'd share some a site I recently discovered it is an Australian site called

The Book Chook is the work of an Australian teacher, writer, editor, reviewer, Susan Stephenson, who seems passionate about helping children read! - Must be a nice person :)

Check out her site, she has helpful hint for parents and lots book reviews, including one for Jeannie Baker's new book Mirror which has just arrived in the library!

Happy Reading

Book Week Update

The excursion for year 2 was cancelled for Monday 23rd August :(

However, Monday will see the library open at lunchtime for any students who would like to come up and borrow one of our many new books :)

I've found that if popular new books are borrowed first in class time, only the students in that class ever get to see the book! So I've decided to do a "stock up" of new books and I am opening the library for those who would like to borrow one of these new books.

There are special conditions for borrowing from the "stock up"
  • students can't have any overdue books to borrow at lunchtime - so get hunting and find those missing books
  • students can only borrow one in a series - so only one
    • Freak Street book
    • I Spy book
    • TinTin or Asterix book
  • students need a library bag with them [a plastic bag will be fine:)]
Don't forget Book Parade Thursday 26th August at 2.30pm.
Come as your favourite book character - and..
Don't forget to tell us who you are, so make a name tag or a poster or just bring along the book :)

I am sorry that the library will be closed  on Wednesday and Thursday for lunch, as book fair books will be out on display on the tables. Don't forget to bring your money on Thursday if you want to buy a book!

See you then

Book Week is nearly here...

Book week is fast approaching!

This year's theme is Across the Story Bridge.
Many students will be helping me make a "Story Bridge" in the library by including a "stone" with their favourite book, be sure to visit if you can make it to our Book Parade and Book Fair on Thursday 26th.

Monday 23rd of August sees the beginning of Book Week.
Marrickville library is hosting a special Book Week performance at the Town Hall.
As there are only 55 places for us, we have offered this to year 2 children to enjoy :)

Wednesday 25th of August sees a very special author visit. Richard Tulloch is coming to share some of his great stories with us. There will be three sessions, so he will be able to cater to each group. Richard Tulloch is a well known author who has written a range of great stories for kids. These include

  • many episodes of Bananas in Pyjamas
  • Danny in the Toy Box
  • Cocky Colin
  • Rodney's Runaway Nose
  • Stories from our Street and Stories from our House
  • Beastly Tales
  • Twisted Tales
  • Weird Stuff
  • Awesome Stuff and
  • Freaky Stuff
Wednesday 25th of August is also Book Fair viewing day. Children will have the chance to come in and look at the books we have on sale at this year's book fair.

Thursday 26th of August: Book Fair buying day. The books will be on sale from 9 am until 4 pm. Parents are welcome
  • in the morning and
  • again at recess and
  • after the Book Week Parade.
If one or two parents are able to help with selling in the morning or in the afternoon (the particularly busy times), please contact me in the library or leave a message at the office.

Thursday 26th of August: Book Week Parade after recess. Come and enjoy the parade of students dressed as one of their favourite book characters.

We look forward to seeing you in book week!

Happy Reading :)

Premier's Reading Challenge coming to a close...

Time is running out for the Premier's Reading Challenge.

At school, we need to sign off on all students participating by the end of August, so we need to have all record cards in by Monday, August 16th. This allows us to enter the details and follow up any problems.

Some people have started entering their books themselves, please have this finished as quickly as possible so they can be validated too. Well done to those who have already finished doing this! We will be validating your books soon.

Do you still have five or more books to go?
Then you will need more than your normal borrowing allowance, so you can

  1. borrow an extra book or two, and
  2. you can come in and change your books over at lunchtime.

All the best and..

Remember, even when the challenge is over -
