Welcome to Premier's Reading Challenge for 2010.
This year we are wanting to encourage all the students to become involved in the challenge. To help children participate we will give each student a record card to record the books they have read. The card will provide the opportunity to record on a graph how they are going. We will then put the information onto the site on your behalf.
We do need parents to fill in the number of the book they have read. This number can be found on the website, on a list in the child's classroom and in the library. I hope to have numbers written into the front of the books, but will begin with the K - 2 books first, as hopefully the year 3-6 students can find the number themselves! If the book is not on the list, you can include it as one of your free choice books. You are allowed up to five free choices.
To further encourage the students, we will give a small school reading certificate at assembly to each child after they have read 10 books, 20 books and for k-2 30 books. They will then receive the official certificate either at the end of the year or early next year, depending on when we receive it.
Please note: If you do not want your child's name published in the newspaper, but want to encourage your child's reading, then let us know. Students can still do the challenge at the school level and receive the school certificates, but not the official Premier's Certificate.
Remember, it is an honesty system and we are wanting to promote a love of reading. So there will be no formal questioning after each book, but we do hope parents will find the time to chat with their children about what they are reading. Perhaps you will get the opportunity to talk about some of the unusual characters that pop up in the children's favourites, like the amazing Captain Underpants, or you can admire together great heroes like Prince Caspian. Enjoyment is the key : )
However kid's beware, while there will be no formal questioning your teacher or teacher-librarian may just decide to give you a quick quiz!
Don't forget to check out the Library wiki for ideas for books. It has pages dedicated to Great Reads for K-2, 3-4 and 5-6 and as the year progresses you will be able to read what the students are saying about these books on Great Reviews for K-2, 3-4, and 5-6. There are no reviews by 3 - 6 yet, so watch this space.
We hope you and your children will joins and enjoy finding new books!
Happy reading : )
